Yeah, somewhere in the HTML you've referenced a file on your desktop

src="file:///C:/Documents%20and%
20Settings/Ken/Desktop/webtest/index.html_txt_img4_cmp.gif"

Find that bit of html and change it to

src="Loading Image..."

It's now linking to Loading Image...

If you have it link to http://www.k2a.co.uk/img9.gif then it will work
as img9.gif is on the server.

Right, you've now linked the panel to img4.gif which works, but has a
couple of missing words (second box down, for example) but img9.gif
doesn't have any missing words.

I think I can see what you're doing.

You can stop it all now by just uploading img9_cmp.gif to your web
server.

What's the _cmp bit for, anyway?

Just refreshing the page is scaring me now. Your problem is with the
following lines of HTML:

You're using FrontPage.

Stick it back to how it used to be and just re-copy img9_cmp.gif or
supput.

Yeah IKWYM ... I had to re-install XP last night after a nightmare
driver "upgrade" went horrifically pear shaped (I was going to do it
from scratch anyway), and I quite like messing about with PCs too.

The front page is linked to img4.gif and all the others are linked to
img9.gif. img9.gif is now blank. Personally I'd upload a renamed
img4.gif from your HD (called img9.gif) and just stick it on the
server. That'll work.

God, no, don't. img4.gif has the missing words.

I'm going out and hope it to be all fixed upon my return.

God bless you.

Now, as someone said, that side nav image does looks shit. What's the
best way for 'me' to change it?

Do you recon I should do a horizontal text version like the one at the
bottom of the page?

I would, but using a table to make it look vaguely like buttons
(depending on the browser). Take a look at muddystuff to see what I
mean. Use a table cell for each link, & set the "light-border-color" to
black & the "dark-border_color" to white.

You'll get a million different opinions though as it's down to personal
taste.

Well I was about to suggest something similar. Just changing the
font and getting rid of the underlining of the hyperlink would
be a good touch, IMO.

Based on what I've seen today, stop using frontpage.

If you want something free and graphical to edit your pages the composer
in mozilla does a better job:

A monkey could hit you with a blunderbus even if it couldn't fire it,
but it might not have the dexterity to open a flick knife. Bad analogy.

Unfortunately the website is down, but I found www.oswd.org useful for
looking up ideas for templates. In fact, I've used some of them in the past.

But as they've stuffed up their own website, not a great recommendation at
the moment. However, stick it in a diary and have a look in a week or so.
You'll find a template you like, then just stick the pictures in. Sorted.

The links aren't in the image, there's a map that sits over the top of
it saying what coordinates relate to each link.

Look at the code in HTML view and you'll see a load of " area shape = "
type stuff.

So any graphics program you like so long as you use the same areas..

It should be simple for someone who knows his way around vector
graphics.

I've quickly thrown together the following using your original .gif as
an example in something as simple as Paint Shop Pro:

This is the template:
<Loading Image...>

I then made a high-contrast template:
Loading Image...

Then made a couple of different gradients:
Loading Image...
Loading Image...
Loading Image...

Then created a basic vector with text on and put it on the
backgrounds:

Loading Image...
Loading Image...
Loading Image...

You can use any of them should you wish, I'm royalty and credit free,
but the style doesn't fit in with the text on your site. Just a
couple of ideas and examples.

Hah.. "Pimp My Page" Don't ever offer to do interior design ;-)
I'll have a play with that. Cheers, I owes you beers.
Your page has been pimped. You didn't notice the re-wording of the
right panel? I'm shocked.
<checks> You loon :-)
I must be bored. Oh, yes, I'm on holiday until 7th November.
Perhaps I should go out and buy chocolate. Yes, that's the answer.
I strongly recommend you try chocolate from Cotons.

Actually, I think the idea of rubber nuclear weapons has legs.

Imagine if you woke up and discovered, in a small crater outside your
house, a rubber lump bearing the inscription "PRESENT FROM THE PEOPLE'S
REPUBLIC OF XXXXXXXX. AS SOON AS WE'VE SAVED UP ENOUGH FOR THE GLOWING
STUFF, WE'LL BE BACK".

Wow, they look great Nick.
Especially http://hayn.gotadsl.co.uk/Cane/V1Metal.jpg
Doesn't it have to be a GIF in order to work though?
A little hard on the eye, especially where you get the dark on dark.
Where the "Mac" is in the 4th box down for example. The background a
little further back into the background would sort it, probably.

That would do it. I just moved the darker reflective stripes to the
side in this version of it:

While I haven't completely solved it by doing that, one could just
stick an adjustment layer behind it like so:

Loading Image...

...which gives it a more subtle effect.

If one were to add a white gradient to the last 10 or 20 pixles on the
right it would fit on the site without modification. Apart from the
text colour and the typeface.

I think I can see what you're doing.
You can stop it all now by just uploading img9_cmp.gif to your web
server.
What's the _cmp bit for, anyway?
I'm guessing here, but I think that "<meta name="Generator"
content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">" may have something to do with it.

IIRC, our friends at Microsoft don't trust their users to name anything.

Since changing a few bits of text on my website this morning I seem to
have dome something to page 1.
The nav bar on the laeft has vanished but still works. Can anyone tell
me what the solution is?
<file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Ken/Desktop/webtest/index.html_txt_img4_cmp.gif>
You need to set it to the image that's on your webserver.
<http://www.k2a.co.uk/img9.gif>
Thanks Nick.
I've done that but it's still not right. Forgive my uselessness
Right, you've now linked the panel to img4.gif which works, but has a
couple of missing words (second box down, for example) but img9.gif
doesn't have any missing words.
I think I can see what you're doing.
You can stop it all now by just uploading img9_cmp.gif to your web
server.
Well that's almost right but it looks like the wrong file. I don't
understand why the fist page should have problems when the others don't
[but then I'm not a webster] I got it working fine up until I delete
img4.gif and replaced it with img9.gif in order to correct the missing
word problem.

It's because all the other pages are linked to img9.gif, and the first
page is linked to something utterly random.

This should be a good bodge to make it look normal:

The current first page links to http://www.k2a.co.uk/img9_cmp.gif as
the mapped image. Just copy img9.gif on your hard drive, FTP into the
server, delete the current img9_cmp.gif and then copy your freshly
renamed img9.gif on your hard drive to img9_cmp.gif and it'll work.

Well, as far as I can see, it's still looking at Ken's computer. Personally,
I'd just get the source from page2.html and copy and paste in.

I'm not sure that having two maps in the same place is worth doing.

Also, I wouldn't reference pictures as "../img3.gif" when you're already in
the root directory. Don't think it'll cause any problems, but just doesn't
make sense.

Oh, and on another point, I wouldn't leave everyones email addresses about
for the harvesters.
