Discussion:
Helmet review? TAKAI M05 SV
(too old to reply)

Just got an HG e-mail listing a flip-front helmet for 59.99 - the TAKAI
M05 SV.

Anyone got one of these, any comments? It's polycarbonate, does that
matter? I wouldn't mind having a flip-front for more "commuting" type
riding and this is remarkably cheap.

Never heard of them, but a cheap, polycarbonate flip probably weighs
only slightly less than your bike.

600g[1] or thereabouts.

[1] I have had a weeny poke about on the interweb and not much to be found
except they seem to be manufactured by an outfit that produces a range of
cheap helmets of the type given away to a first time scoot buyer and thus
unlikely to be suitable for a riding style that has you lying on the tank
tucked in behind one or more of your bubbles.

Actually it does seem a bit wrong but then again there is no guarantee I
read it right. I have been poking around at all sort of Takai helmets and
that is a number that stuck in me mind.

It's definitely wrong, even the uber light carbon fibre Schuberth
weighs more than that. 1600g is possible I guess (my Uvex is 1250g),
but even then I'd be surprised.

My Nitro flip front weighs 1865g and my HJC 'normal' weighs 1500g - but I
have got a big head.

Christ on a bike, even some good quality carbon lids weigh in at around
1,600grams.

If it has the appropriate standards sticker on it then it is fine. Liable
to be less than salubrious for that money of course but with the price of
labour in foreign who knows what unexpected quality you might get over
branded offerings of yesteryear.

Above all else the thing to note is; because of the gert great seam
turbulating the airflow just a centimetre or so from your ear, front
lifters are all noisy and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that
the rise in volume with speed was a sum that involved the square of
velocity.

Some, of course, are noisier than others and just like the rest of us you
will only ever find out if you actually buy the thing and use it but at
least you have been forewarned.

What I can't understand is why flip-front helmets tend to be the cheap
ones rather than the more expensive ones as you'd expect.

Perhaps the feature list blinds you to the fact that it's generally shite
- like the full-suspension mountain bikes that supermarkets sell for £50.

BMW does an expensive flip-front helmet? I bet it's motorised and has
some kind of weird chin-suspension gizmo.

To be fair, some of the BMW helmets are very nice indeed.

Because in general they don't come from a manufacturer with A Name to add
to the retail price. However the same cannot be said for the BMW front
lifter wot I used (and still own) many years ago. That was downright
fucking expensive and fortunately for my wallet, a present.

Are Schoei regarded as cheap helmets these days?

I don't remember the exact price but my Schoei flip front helmet wasn't
cheap and is actually quite a good helmet to wear until about 130mph
when it tends to lift a bit.

They are Chinese made, badly at that, and only sold by Hein Gericke.
They just about meet current ECER22-05. The interiors are what really
lets them down as they are very cheaply made and fall apart within a
few months, plus the fact that in a year of trying them on people's
heads I only found one person who said they'd be happy wearing one and
even he said it didn't fit properly, but he wanted the cheapest lid
available.

Avoid. At 9.99 you're getting a lid that is worth exactly that, if not
maybe a little less.

Saw this, read what Lozzo had to say and went to have a look.
Then bought a HJC flip-up in silver (I've not graduated to the black hat).
Good fit for my head, washable internals, seems quiet (urban riding) and
<bluetooth> ready (whatever..).
